Dollar General and Unilever work together to promote literacy at school Print E-mail
Mooresville, NC – Dollar General, sponsor of the Oct. 12 Dollar General 300 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, and its partner for the event Unilever, are doing more than just sponsoring the NASCAR Busch Series event. The two companies are helping Lake Norman Elementary School, an award-winning school in Iredell County, promote its accelerated reader program.            Dollar General is donating 300 pairs of tickets to be given away to students who participate in the school’s accelerated reading program. The tickets will be distributed to participating students in Kindergarten through 5th grade.Lake Norman Elementary School offers students literacy-based activities that are appropriate for each grade level, encouraging all students to set their own reading goals. Students who achieve their goals will be given a pair of tickets as their reward for participating. This incentive is part of the school’s initiative to focus on reading with the goal of achieving a “year’s worth of growth for a year’s worth of work.”Lake Norman Elementary School Principal Boen Nutting feels the award offered by Dollar General to her students will only enhance their overall campaign for the year to promote literacy.“We are so excited and fortunate to have an opportunity to partner with Dollar General to promote literacy at Lake Norman Elementary,” said Nutting. “The opportunity to award 300 children with tickets to the Dollar General 300 has created quite a buzz among our students.”            Supporting the reading program at Lake Norman Elementary School fits perfectly with Dollar General’s commitment to literacy. This commitment began with J.L. Turner, co-founder of Dollar General. With only a third grade education, he overcame tremendous odds and built the company now known as Dollar General. To further its support of literacy and education, Dollar General founded the Dollar General Literacy Foundation in 1987, which provides grants to non-profit organizations throughout the discount retailer’s 35 state market area.
