As academia diversifies, different conceptions of the methods and purpose of philosophy emerge. This talk looks at various accounts of‘philosophy’and‘rhetoric’and explores their value in contemporary society. The accounts of philosophy examined include by traditional Western ideals dating back to Plato, and modern variants such as‘philosophy as a way of life’, but attention will also be paid to conceptions of wisdom found in traditional Chinese thought. The talk seeks to highlight how the methods and values in the discipline of philosophy can be of use in everyday public life, beyond the academic arena.
